Joy, Pleasure, & Happiness
So many things in life spark joy for me. My day always begins with that first, perfect cup of coffee—a small ritual that sets a positive tone and launches my daily quest for happiness. This simple act, repeated each morning, fills me with a sense of warmth and comfort. On Sundays, joy takes on a special flavor: sitting in our favorite church pew, listening as our minister shares his thoughtful take on a passage from the Holy Bible. There’s something profoundly comforting and uplifting about those moments.
Another source of pleasure is gathering around the dinner table with my friends—affectionately known as “The Gang.” These friends are not just companions, they are my support system, my confidants, and my partners in crime. Most days, five or six of us can be found swapping stories, sharing laughs, and plotting our next little adventure as we enjoy our meal. Our unofficial mission: to make sure everyone leaves with at least one new smile. The joy of their company and the shared experiences we have are invaluable to me, and they play a significant role in my pursuit of happiness.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the sheer joy of good food, especially the kind that comes with plenty of calories and even more laughter. The shared laughter, the light-hearted banter, and the joy of being in the moment make these meals truly special. Of course, I recognize that not everything we enjoy is necessarily good for us. If something is truly self-destructive—like smoking, excessive drinking, or overeating—it probably belongs in the “addictive” column rather than the “joyful” one.
If I had to choose what brings me the most happiness, it would be reconnecting with relatives and friends I haven’t seen in a while. These meaningful visits, filled with shared memories and heartfelt conversations, bring a depth of joy that is unmatched. As I’ve grown older, visiting people brings me far more satisfaction than visiting places. For a long time, I worried that losing the ability to drive would take this pleasure away, but that fear has faded. Now, I look forward to many more years of meaningful visits and shared moments.
Francis Bacon once wrote, “There may be Peace without Joy, and Joy without Peace, but the two combined make Happiness.” In my experience, joy and peace are deeply intertwined, and together, they create the richest kind of happiness.
